A Weekend Training for People Bringing
Mindfulness into Schools

The workshop is open to anyone currently teaching mindfulness to grades K-12, or who is interested in doing so. We will teach the practice of mindfulness & present a sample curriculum for a mindfulness training course targeted toward children and young adults. It can be used as a template for a 5 - 8 week, two to three times per week training, or can be adjusted to accommodate other programs. We will give recommendations for adjusting the curriculum to fit the constraints of particular situations. The workshop will be lecture, practice and interactive exercises.

Topics include:
  • Working with children from diverse social, economic and racial backgrounds.
  • Teaching mindfulness to children in challenging situations
  • Getting and keeping children interested and engaged.
  • Working with classroom teachers and school administrators.
  • Involving parents in supporting student�s use of mindfulness
  • Importance of embodying mindfulness
  • The science behind mindfulness
  • Research demonstrating the power of using mindfulness with adolescents
Presenters

Gina Biegel is an MFT for Kaiser Permanente and works with adolescents in San Jose, Ca. She has conducted and published research on adolescents and therapists who have practiced Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.

Megan Cowan has over a decade of experience teaching mindfulness. She is co-coordinating the CPME program. She teaches mindfulness to K-12 students and supervises mindfulness teachers who work for CPME.

Laurie Grossman, the Community Outreach Coordinator for Park Day School has worked in Oakland's schools and neighborhoods for over 20 years. Together with Richard Shankman and Megan Cowan, Laurie created The Community Partnership for Mindfulness in Education (a program of Park Day School) in order to bring mindfulness to Oakland Schools.

Pam Nicholls is a special resource teacher at Park Day School who has studied the brain connection to learning for over a decade.

Richard Shankman lives in Oakland, CA. He has been practicing and teaching mindfulness throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Richard is active in bringing mindfulness to prisons and schools.


Time: 9am - 4pm
Cost: $150 (no one will be turned away for lack of funds)
