Being Green: The Basics Park
Day
School has a long history of emphasis on environmental education.
Our lovely four-acre campus invites the study of ecology. Children play
in our
gardens, learn to care for the plants and animals on our site and in
our classrooms, and enjoy the park-like grounds on a daily basis. In
each grade, nature study has been a tradition, whether it"s leading the
school wide recycling efforts, turning a first grade classroom into an
habitat, such as a rainforest, or planting and harvesting vegetables
that are taken to a local shelter where our third grade students
volunteer their time in the kitchen. We also hold an annual Green
Math & Science Night. We've added a Nature Center and a seed to
table Learning Garden program.

Fourth graders lead the Lower School during a "Green Sing"
In 2005, our staff and
board took the next natural step to work toward obtaining certification
by Alameda County as a Green Business. We achieved this goal in
the Spring of 2006 through joint efforts of staff, children and
parents, and became the first school in Oakland, public or private, to
do so. We were
re-certified in 2010.
