Harriet Cohen

Harriet Cohen (1937 - 2025)

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Harriet Cohen, a beloved founder of Park Day School and longtime teacher. Harriet was a uniquely gifted educator, and for those who knew and loved her, it is difficult to capture the depth of her impact on hundreds of children, families, and colleagues in just a few words. The family has shared an obituary here, and if Harriet’s love of children and learning touched your life, we invite you to share memories and photos here:

Former Head of School Tom Little once described Harriet as someone who helped children grow into their best selves well beyond their time in her classroom. In a letter to the community upon her “retirement” (partial, as she continued supporting teachers and later led the Bridge-K program), Tom wrote that “parents, students, and staff all share a tremendous respect for her professionalism, deep wisdom, many talents, and her profound dedication to children. Her gentle guidance, her deep understanding of each child’s needs, her original songs, and her dynamic energy helped establish Park Day School as a thriving learning community that extends far beyond the school walls.”

Together with Susan Erb, Tom Little, and other collaborators, Harriet envisioned and built Park Day from a small learning community in 1976, preparing it to grow into the vibrant school it is today. While many faces have changed over the years, the founding spirit of Park Day that Harriet helped instill remains. The care, curiosity, and love of learning that define our community are a direct reflection of the ethos she helped create.

Those who knew Harriet often speak of her quiet clarity, deep care, and wisdom. Stories abound from former students, colleagues, and alumni. Her presence continues to be felt throughout this special place.

While Harriet’s legacy will always live on at Park Day School, her presence in our world is deeply missed.
